Architectural accessibility

The National Digital Archive, address: ul. Stefana Hankiewicza 1, 02-103 Warsaw

  1. The building that houses the NDA (administered by the Central Archives of Modern Records) is situated on a slight rise above ground level. The difference between the street level and the ground floor with the main entrance is about 2.5 m. The main entrance to the building for visitors is located on the west side at ul. Hankiewicza, i.e. across from the Hale Banacha.
  2. When trying to access the building through the main entrance, people with disabilities encounter the following architectural barriers: a) stairs leading from the street to the main courtyard (12 stairs, 13 cm each); b) a gate at the top of the stairs, approx. 85 cm wide; c) a courtyard made of paving stones; d) stairs from the main courtyard to the ground floor area with the registration desk (security post) - 6 stairs, each approx. 12 cm high; e) construction of main doors - double doors without a locking function, with wing width of 80 cm, opened mechanically; opening the second wing requires the assistance of staff. No solutions have been applied to reduce architectural barriers, in particular the building has no ramps or access ramps for wheelchairs.
  3. In the building itself, the disabled will encounter further architectural difficulties. Immediately behind the main door there is a vestibule and another swing door. In the four-storey building (basement, ground floor and two floors), people walk mainly using the stairs. The entrance to the main staircase is limited by a grate (approx. 110 cm wide) with an access control system. The main staircase does not have wheelchair transport facilities installed. A person with a disability who wants to get to the NDA Research Room on the first floor needs to climb 23 stairs, each about 14 cm high.
  4. There is a passenger lift in the auxiliary shaft of the staircase. It is not adjusted to transport the people with disabilities as the shaft is very narrow. The design of the cabin makes it impossible to transport wheelchairs (width of the cabin door: 80 cm, size of the cabin - depth: 80 cm, width: 120 cm).
  5. Access to the building is possible from the unloading area. It can be accessed from the north and south sides via two delivery ramps. The ramps are made of paving stones. The unloading area consists of a ramp adjacent to the warehouse of the Archive. The unloading area can be accessed from the registration desk via a technical passageway. The registration desk is accessed by stairs (4 slightly curved stairs, each about 15 cm high and with a step width of 14 to 30 cm). The Administrator of the building does not plan to use the unloading space as a circulation area for the users of the archive. No architectural or technical facilities have been provided in this part of the building to enable the free movement of the people with disabilities.
  6. The Administrator of the building has designated and adapted, within the architectural limits of the building, a toilet for the people with disabilities. It is located on the 1st floor, by the auxiliary staircase. The access to the toilet for the disabled is limited - among other things, there is no circulation area adapted to the people with disabilities that would lead from the registration desk to the toilet. The toilet adaptation itself also does not meet the requirements for rooms adapted for the disabled (high mounted fixtures, light switches, etc.).
  7. The building has no designated disabled parking spaces.
  8. The building and all its rooms can be entered with an assistance dog and a guide dog.
  9. There is no Braille signage, nor contrast or enlarged print markings for the blind and visually impaired.
  10. It is not possible to use a sign language interpreter provided by NDA.
