The Polish Institute’s mission is to advance knowledge about Poland and the Polish American community (Polonia) to America’s pluralistic society and to assist scholars, scientists, and artists in their research and activities connected with Polish and Polish American studies.

The Institute carries out its mission and goals through the following activities and services:

  • Regularly publishes (since 1956) The Polish Review, a scholarly, multi-disciplinary quarterly on Polish affairs, books, monographs, and bibliographies.

  • Operates The Alfred Jurzykowski Memorial Library, a specialized reference library on Polish studies.

  • Collects and processes archival materials related to Polish and Polish American studies, thus making The Polish Institute an excellent center of research, documentation and information.

  • Assists scholars and students from the United States and abroad in their research.

  • Presents a comprehensive view of Polish and Polish American cultures through frequent lectures, symposia, seminars, authors' evenings, exhibits, and special programs for its membership and the wider public.American and Polish scholars and artists are provided a forum for their work.

  • Organizes annual scholarly conferences which attract scholars from all over the United States and Poland.

  • Cooperates with Poland’s major academic and educational institutions such as the Polska Akademia Umiejetnosci (PAU) in Krakow, Polska Akademia Nauk (PAN) in Warsaw, Naczelna Dyrekcja Archiwow Panstwowych, Biblioteka Narodowa, Fundacja Na Rzecz Nauki Polskiej. PAU has chosen to have its America office (stacja) located on the premises of PIASA in New York City.

  • Serves as a resource on Poland and Polish topics for producers of film, T.V., radio, and the press.

  • Cooperates with universities and professional organizations in sponsoring conferences and other programs.

  • Provides consultants, advisors and speakers to Polish American groups who sponsor conferences and other programs.

  • Serves as a liaison between American and Polish academic circles.
